The return of polka dots

Once considered an old-fashioned print from vintage dresses and retro photos, polka dots are suddenly back and bigger than ever. From high-end runways to everyday accessories, the spotted pattern has taken over fashion again, mixing vintage style with a fresh updated look.
According to Vogue, polka dots made a huge comeback on runways like Miu Miu and Jacquemus, showing that the pattern isn’t just a throwback, it’s a statement piece. The magazine also notes that polka dots have been popular since the 1800s, famously worn by icons like Marilyn Monroe.
In Vogue Arabia, writers describe how designers are making polka dots larger and bolder, breaking away from the “small and cute” look of the past. The article also highlights how Gen Z loves the trend because it shows personality and stands out. Meanwhile, The New York Post called polka dots “the print of the summer” and pointed out how statement pieces from Kate Spade and Coach are helping spread the trend.
At Ransom Everglades, students are noticing the shift too. “I actually really like it”, said Tova Katz ’28, a student at RE. “Polka dots feel fun and different from all the basic stuff that’s been popular lately. It’s kind of like a mix of vintage and modern. What’s cool is that it’s not just clothes anymore. I’ve seen polka dot claw clips, phone cases, tote bags, and even nail designs”.
The pattern isn’t only on runways, its showing up in people’s everyday lives. Accessories, school items, and even phone cases now feature the iconic design, proving that the trend has gone far beyond just fashion.
The rise in the trend has been fueled by social media. Gabi Bigio ’26, an editor for The Catalyst, said her feed has been filled with polka dots all summer. “I’ve seen polka dots a ton trending online recently,” she said. “They’ve been taking over my whole For You Page. Polka dots are kind of like the cheetah print replacements, like when cheetah print took over zebra print, the same thing is being repeated now.”
Bigio also noted that influencers and celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Margot Robbie, and Hailey Bieber have been spotted wearing polka dot pieces, inspiring others to do the same.
Marielena Davila, a content creator and influencer, said she’s noticed more engagement whenever she posts polka dot looks. “Theres a lot more engagement, and even the brands I’m posting about reach out and repost the content”, she said. Davila describes polka dots as “elegant, sophisticated, and timeless”, adding, “I think they’ve never going to go out of style. They’ve been around for many years, and they’ll be around for many more to come.”
Her observation matches what fashion magazines are reporting. Supporting the idea that brands are bringing back polka dots in new ways, turning a once retro print into a modern wardrobe staple.
The return of polka dots fits perfectly into today’s larger vintage revival trend, where old styles are reimagined with a fresh twist. From low rise jeans to ribbon accessories, nostalgia is shaping how people express themselves through fashion.
As Katz put it best, “You can wear a plain outfit and just throw on a polka dot clip or bag, and it already looks more interesting. Its vintage, but it feels new again.”
